What to Expect at 5 Months
Five months is often a sweet spot for baby sleep. The 4-month regression is (hopefully) behind you, and your baby's sleep is becoming more organized. Many babies are ready for a more consistent schedule at this age.
Sleep Totals
- Total daily sleep: 14-15 hours
- Night sleep: 10-12 hours (with 0-2 feeds)
- Day sleep: 3-4 hours across 3 naps
- Longest night stretch: 6-8 hours for many babies
Wake Windows at 5 Months
At 5 months, most babies can handle 2-2.5 hours of awake time between naps. Wake windows typically get longer throughout the day:
- First wake window: 1.5-2 hours
- Second wake window: 2-2.25 hours
- Third wake window: 2-2.5 hours
- Last wake window: 2-2.5 hours

Common 5 Month Sleep Challenges
Nap Transitions
Some babies start showing signs of dropping the third nap around 5-6 months. Signs they're ready:
- Third nap becomes a battle
- Bedtime gets pushed too late
- Night sleep is affected
If your baby isn't ready, keep the catnap short (30 minutes max).
Early Morning Waking
Waking before 6 AM? Check:
- Is the room dark enough?
- Is bedtime too early or too late?
- Is baby getting enough daytime sleep?
Rolling Practice at Night
Babies learning to roll may practice in the crib—even at 2 AM. This usually passes within a couple of weeks.
Tips for Better Sleep at 5 Months
-
Aim for crib naps when possible — As sleep matures, stationary naps often become higher quality than motion sleep.
-
Extend short naps — If baby wakes after 30-45 minutes, try giving them 5-10 minutes to resettle before intervening.
-
Watch for overtiredness — An overtired baby fights sleep harder. Earlier bedtime often helps.
-
Consistent sleep environment — Dark room, white noise, comfortable temperature (68-72°F).
-
Practice independent sleep — If you haven't already, try putting baby down awake sometimes.
Starting Solids?
Many parents start solids around 5-6 months (with pediatrician approval). Food should complement, not replace, milk feeds. Starting solids won't necessarily help baby sleep longer—that's a myth.
